Curious George lives in our classroom, but he gets awfully lonely when there are no kids around. At the end of the day, he’ll go home with a new student for a night. Curious George comes with his favorite book and a journal in his brightly colored bag. Please use George’s journal to help your child record a few of his adventures at your house (and possibly a picture or photo). The next school day, pack up Curious George with all of his things and send him back to school for the next student to take home.
Our class will have sharing (show and tell) each day. I will send home the sharing bag with your child if it is their day to share. Only one child will share per day. Your child can bring in a special object (shell from the beach, a creation that they made, a book that they love, etc.), a picture or photograph, or simply share something about themselves. I would like to discourage sending in toys for sharing unless they are truly special to your child. I would like sharing to be a chance for each student to share something about themselves with the class so that we can get to know each other better and to veer away from students sharing their “newest” toy.
Our afternoon weekly schedule is full of specials, therefore, rest will be combined with teacher read aloud. Students may bring in a small blanket to lay on while I read. This should go home at the end of the week and come back to school on Monday. Please do not send in toys or stuffed animals as these can cause a distraction during our quiet time of day.
Students can bring in an individual HEALTHY snack from home to eat during our daily Explore time in the afternoon. I will let you know if there are any allergies that you should be aware of. Students are welcome to finish their lunch from home at this time as well.
Learning to be Resourceful - In life, all people need to find strategies to solve problems. My goal is for students to begin trusting themselves to overcome obstacles. This can apply in reading (finding strategies to understand new words), in math (using different math tools to solve problems), science (finding different ways to test theories), and socially (resolving conflicts in ways that help everyone).
Lifelong Love for Learning - As this is their first year in school, it is imperative that students begin to love learning. It is my goal that all students WANT to learn more, and become active participants in their own education. This foundation starts in kindergarten when early experiences shape a child’s school identity for their future. Identify as a Successful Learner - We are writers and readers in kindergarten. We are learning to read and write in the “grown up” way, but our kindergarten reading and writing is just as important. The success that children experience in kindergarten will set the stage for future learning. Reflect on Learning - One of the most powerful things students can experience is being aware of what they are learning. Reflective students actually create their own learning experience. This goes hand in hand with how we learn. When students understand their own learning processes, they can then begin to construct knowledge in ways that are more meaningful for them. We have a special birthday activity that we will do in our classroom on your child’s birthday. Also, unless there is one going home to every student in our class, please do not pass out birthday party invitations at school.
Volunteering will look a little different in Kindergarten this year. I would like to have volunteers assist us in the afternoon during our Writer's Workshop. We will have our specials in the afternoon, so the times will vary depending on the day. I will also have a sign up sheet available for people who would like to assist me one or two mornings a week with prep work (cutting, laminating, bulletin boards, etc.) as needed. There is a lot of prep that goes into Kindergarten and I would love the additional support. I will also have a take home tub that I keep outside of my classroom with projects that can be completed at home. In addition, there will be opportunities to help out with art and science projects as well as volunteering for field trips and help in the computer lab. If you would like to volunteer at Llewellyn you need to complete a background check online. https://volunteer.pps.net/ Prep Help: Wednesday 8:00 – 9:30 & Friday 8-9:30 (as needed) Writer’s Workshop Help: Monday 11:30-12:15 Wednesday 11:30-12:15 Friday 11:30-12:15 Computer: Friday 1:30-2:10 Kindergarteners are at lunch and recess from 10:45 to 11:25. Your child can either bring a lunch from home or buy a school lunch. If bringing a lunch from home, it can stay in your child’s locker until lunchtime – we’ll pick them up on our way to the cafeteria.
If your child will be buying a school lunch, please make sure that they have money on their lunch account. Each student has a lunch card with his or her name on it that can be used for purchasing a hot lunch or a milk to go with a lunch from home. You can add money to this card in a couple of ways. You can visit the cafeteria before school and see the cook, who will assist you in adding money. You can send lunch money to school and your child can give it to the cook during lunchtime. Or, you can take care of your child’s lunch account online. Visit the PPS website, click on the “How Do I?” drop down menu and select, “Add money to a lunch account” for more information. Drop-Off - In the morning, the bell will ring at 8:00. Prior to this time, you and your child may wait on the playground or come into the cafeteria for breakfast. Teachers will be on duty on the playground at 7:45, but please be aware that there is no adult supervision on the playground before this time. We ask that no one be in the halls or at their lockers prior to that 8:00 bell ringing. When the bell rings at 8:00, students will line up at the Kindergarten spot outside in the back of the building and I will meet them and bring them into the building. This will help limit the number of people in the building at one time. Our school day starts promptly at 8:00. Students are considered tardy at 8:05. If your child does come to school after 8:05, he or she will need to go to the office for a tardy slip.
Pick Up - The dismissal bell rings at 2:15. Just prior to this, all kindergarten classes will walk outside in the back of the building at our Kindergarten marker for dismissal. I will dismiss students to their “grown ups”. Please be patient during this process, as I will only release a student when I see their adult with my own eyes. If you are unsure whether or not I saw you, please check in with me. Students who take the bus or who go to an after school program will be escorted by a Fifth Grade Safety Patrol student. Students who are not picked up by about 2:25 will be taken to the office to wait. If your child is half-day and leaves us at 10:40, you can meet him or her at the end of the hall by the front doors. A teacher will wait with all the half-day students and make sure they are picked up. Please make sure to check in with this teacher so that we see your child leaving with you. If there is a change in how your child goes home, I must have a written note from a parent/guardian. |
