So much has been happening in the world of kindergarten. In reading, students are working on fluency (reading like they talk). As beginning readers, students are sounding out new words and their reading tends to sound choppy. I am encouraging them to go back and reread over and over again until they can read the sentence smooth like they talk. Encourage your child to do this at home as well. Once they go back and reread and reread and reread, those words become star words and the next time they see that word they will be able to read it smoothly like they talk rather than sounding it out again. I love when students get excited about reading their books and when they master the books in their book box and ask for new good fit books! It's amazing to see the progress that can happen so quickly. I am sure you are seeing this at home as well! In writer's workshop, we have finally learned about putting spaces between our words. What a difference this lesson makes. Students are able to differentiate between words and letters and now they are able to share their writing with their peers, with me and with the class. I love seeing them fill up their pages with small moment stories. We started opinion writing today and wrote opinions using sentence frames such as: I like ______, I don't like _____, My favorite is _____, I feel _____, I think _____. In math, we have been working on story problems and showing our work and our thinking in multiple ways. This will be an option during Math Writing during our Daily Math time. We did our second STEM challenge last week. Students were challenged to build the tallest structure using marshmallows, toothpicks, and spaghetti. They had to first count out the materials, then begin building. It has been fun to watch them problem solve and work together. Next Wednesday is a two hour late opening for students. Thank you again to all my parents for helping me with take home projects and prep at school. You are amazing and I appreciate the help! |
