It's been a busy and eventful week in Kindergarten. But, we have managed to start a new writing unit, learn two new reading strategies, start our unit on space, work on fact fluency, money, addition, subtraction, and identify without hesitation how to choose a good fit book!
In writing, we are beginning our Spring Personal Narrative unit. In this unit: Students will write stories about their lives and experiences that include a beginning, middle and end during our third Personal Narrative writing unit. Writers will:
The two reading strategies that we worked on this week are: Identifying the main idea of a story and reading and looking for interesting words to define and/or use in our writing. I posted pictures of student writing and illustrations of our story of the week Hide Clyde. We also reviewed good fit books today and students could name everything that makes up a good fit book (interesting, can read most (or all) of the words, not to easy and not too hard, understand the story). We talked about the fact that the books that are at their reading level are not very interesting (pretty sure none of them will remember reading Tap Rap Bam when they grow up) but that these books will help them become better readers. I also stressed that they should have 2 books from my classroom library that are interesting or that they want to read the words in some day. Students can read the pictures, look for words they know, and retell stories. I got a class subscription to RAZ Kids, it's an online app/website that has hundreds of books at every level. I will send home a sheet with your students login next week. Again, not the most interesting books, but this is just one component of reading. I hope and encourage you to read interesting books with your child!!! Thank you to all the parents who helped make the party a success. Obviously, the kiddos had a great time as you can see for yourself on shutterfly!
